What the words mean
Retrograde is apparent motion. Earth is passing Mercury, so against the stars Mercury looks as if it slows, stops, and moves backward. It is not a horoscope and it does not depend on a birth chart. A station is the minute that motion changes direction.
Pre-shadow starts when Mercury, still moving forward, first reaches the degree where it will later station direct. Post-shadow ends when, after the direct station, it passes the degree of the retrograde station. Cazimi is the inferior conjunction: Mercury stands between Earth and the Sun, inside the retrograde.
